Kirby’s Dream Land 3 – Parasol Ride

Above: the only doodle I did during 2017’s AGDQ.

One of few things that still make me feel the same as I did when I was a kid is Kirby’s Dream Land 3, the first game in the series that I ever played. I had only borrowed it from my neighbor when I was 11, but it always stuck with me. It was almost criminal that I didn’t own it t all until last year — I acquired this game on the cheap after having my SNES modded (thanks, John!) and buying a Japanese version of the game, which, apart from the intro screen, is the exact same. Score!

I love the style and mood of the recent Kirby games, but deep inside, I always want a return to this quiet, painterly style of Kirby. It’s been done in yarn and in clay, but not quite like this game. And the style’s something that’s a challenge for me to mimic (as you can see above), but I love to try!

Chuchu’s powerups weren’t my favorite, but her parasol ride with Kirby was just too adorable! It’s simple, cute moments like that in games that make me step back and go, “Wow!” — especially when you can watch frame-by-frame the care and attention that went into these old animations!
